hi there!

I’m Emily Bown

Im a non-diet, weight-inclusive Registered Dietitian and Health & Wellness Conversion Copywriter.

Nutrition counseling and copywriting both involve getting someone to take an action, and when used ethically, it supports them in taking an action that will positively transform their life.

My Story

Let’s make food fun again!

I believe in taking the fear and power out of food, and making it an enjoyable and memorable part of life.”

Hi, I am Emily Bown (let’s clarify, NOT BRown the color, but Down with a B ;).

I help people improve their relationship with food and their bodies through compassionate and inclusive nutrition practices. I believe wellness and eating disorder treatments occur best through love, empathy, and compassion.

If your sink breaks, you call a plumber.  Car needs maintenance?  Bring it to a mechanic. When your mental and physical health is deteriorating, a professional is a smart choice to find a solution.  Healing one’s relationship with food is difficult.  We all need support and help from time to time.  There is no shame in asking for help.  Only wisdom and bravery.

I have a passion for mental health and nutrition. I specialize in eating disorders /disordered eating, body image issues, anxiety and depression around food, pregnancy and postpartum eating…. all with an emphasis on intuitive eating – we dive more into what this means while we work together.

You or someone you love may be feeling confused or have low confidence when it comes to your relationship with food. Perhaps you know you need help but feel overwhelmed.  You might be tired of feeling ashamed and are looking for support.  You could benefit from a Dietitian who specializes in eating disorders.  Dieticians understand the psychological aspect of the relationship with food.  We want your recovery to be strong, achievable, AND sustainable.

My Philosophy

I am a firm believer that diets DON’T WORK. Why do I believe this? A few reasons…

“I believe food should ENHANCE life, not consume it!”

1. If it’s not sustainable (something you can do for the rest of your life), then it doesn’t ‘work’, and it’s not healthy for you.

2. Your body is smarter than your diet! The body does not know the difference between “starvation” and a “diet” – so it will do anything possible to protect itself… aka, slow down metabolism, hold onto food/fat, increase cravings, etc!

3. Mindset: Food is mental! Food is emotional! until you slow down and get curious with your mindset around food/body/self – the destructive behaviors will always come back.

Yes, I am a Dietitian, but I tell clients I’m more of a nutrition therapist.

Why? Because before we can talk about food/diet, we have to understand the emotions, feelings, and behaviors we have around food and body image. This is where the real work begins. This is where we start to build a sustainable and healthy mind & body!

At my counseling practice, I reject all shame, guilt, and judgment surrounding food & body.  I pride myself on connecting with clients on a deeper, emotional level.  I want you to know that I don’t eat salads and smoothies all the time.  In fact, I enjoy desserts every day.  The key is to add foods to your diet; focus on health and happiness, all while bringing the fun back into eating.

I recognize the importance of supporting ALL people suffering from body image or eating disorders, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, body type, or financial status.

Fun Facts

A few interesting tidbits about me:

I’m the only blond in my immediate family, my little sister used to tease me and tell me I was adopted when I was younger

I was a competitive soccer player, playing from age 5-17. My team made it to the state championships when I was in 7th grade and we lost in double-overtime. I cried that entire rest of the day and threw the medal out my car window, I was so upset! Lol!

My older brother is completely deaf and has Down Syndrome. He is my BEST BUD. I helped at a lot of special needs events growing up – my heart, compassion, patience, and career choice are because of him!

I am a COFFEEHOLIC! I have been to over 40 coffee shops in CA and beyond! I love supporting small shops, especially if they make their own syrups in-house, roast their own beans, or even make their own milks! **If you ever need a coffee shop recommendation. I GOT YOU 😉

When I was younger, I struggled with an eating disorder. In 8th grade, I was hospitalized and almost died. It was from this struggle that I realized the connection between food and mental health and gained my passion for this field!

I have Hashimoto’s Thyroid Disease – The thyroid gland makes hormones that control virtually all of the body’s metabolic functions (how the body turns food into energy) and keep it working normally. Hashimoto’s is a type of autoimmune disease

Hashimoto’s disease is common and affects about five people in 100 in the United States.

What makes Emily qualified:

– Masters in Clinical Dietetics + 1200 Dietetic internship (Grand Valley State, MI)

I complete yearly continuing education to maintain my license and enhance my skills in the mental health field.

Throughout my career, I have been blessed to work in a diverse series of places. I have worked in residential eating disorder facilities, outpatient facilities, the Women Infant and Child Governmental Nutrition Program, as well as several substance abuse rehab and mental health facilities.

I have served on the board of the Orange County chapter of the International Association of Eating Disorder Professionals, I’m a member of the International Federation of Eating Disorder Dietitians, and am getting Intuitive Eating Counseling certified. I am also a certified conversion copywriter professional, having completed the Clickworthy Copywriting Certification course. I can help you with writing copy – or words that sell- for your wellness service and website.

On a Personal note…

On a personal note, my journey was heavily influenced by growing up with a special needs brother.  My brother, completely deaf and with Down Syndrome, is my best friend.  I was a “mama’s helper” and growing up I learned how important it is to be gentle and loving.  Josh taught me patience, compassion, and understanding. Unfortunately, I also learned how people can be cruel and selfish when faced with diversity. I found myself drawn towards a helping career- the idea of using words and emotions to empower others, and help them achieve success!

I have been happily married since October 2020 and have a beautiful daughter, Madelyn.  My husband works in the wellness industry as a chiropractor.  Together, we work on wellness, -mental, physical, and spiritual.   While he aims to reduce people’s physical pain in a natural way, I try to restore people’s confidence and relationship with food in a trusting (mental) way.  If this resonates with you and your values, get in touch to set up that initial consult.

I deeply believe that YOUR STORY MATTERS.  YOU MATTER.  Are you ready to make your health and relationship with food a priority?  Get in touch with me and start regaining control of your daily life, and your health.   Every recovery journey is different.  What will your path be like?
